Objetivos
El Departamento de Ecología tiene como objetivos la realización de investigación, docencia, adiestramiento científico y extensión universitaria en el campo de la ecología, entendida ésta en el sentido amplio, donde el estudio de la Biodiversidad, desde el niveles de organización molecular al ecosistemico, emerge como el elemento integrador que se manifiesta mediante actividades que confluyen en el estudio de los mecanismos y procesos involucrados en la generación, mantención y perturbación, natural y antrópica, de la diversidad biológica en ambientes marinos y terrestres, así como de las relaciones evolutivas entre sus componentes.

Breve historia
El Instituto deCiencias Biológicas, actual Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas, fue fundado por acuerdo del Honorable Consejo Superior de la Universidad en el mes de Febrero del año 1970. El año 1973, mediante un decreto de Rectoría se ratificó su organización en base a Departamentos, siendo uno de ellos el Departamento de Biología Ambiental y de Poblaciones. Un decreto de Rectoría del mes de diciembre del año 1988 cambió su nombre por el actual deDepartamento de Ecología. Inicialmente, su organización interna comprendió los laboratorios de Botánica, Zoología y Ecología. Su actual organización incluye el Centro FONDAP de Estudios Avanzados en Ecología yBiodiversidad (CASEB), al cual están adscritos la mayoría de sus académicos, y por unidades de servicio, entre las cuales se encuentra la Estación De Investigaciones Ecológicas Mediterráneas (EDIEM) lugar donde se realizan actividades de investigación y docencia en diferentes sistemas ecológicos terrestres de Chile central. Los académicos del Departamento de Ecología son los principales usuarios de las facilidades existentes en la Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas (ECIM) que la Facultad posee en la localidad de las Cruces, Comuna del Quisco, Chile central. El Departamento cuenta también con la Colección de Flora y Fauna "Dr. Patricio Sánchez Reyes", que sirve de apoyo significativo a las labores de investigación y de docencia de los propios integrantes del Departamento o de visitantes y usuarios externos

Docencia
Los profesores del Departamento imparten la docencia de pregrado principalmente en los cursos de biología animal, biología vegetal, evolución, bioestadística y ecología, según la planificación que realizan el departamento y la Dirección de Docencia de la Facultad, tanto a los alumnos de las carreras de Licenciatura en Ciencias Biológicas y Bioquímica como a los de otras Facultades de la Universidad.
La Mención Ecología del programa de Doctorado en Ciencias Biológicas de la Facultad, cuya programación y conducción es de responsabilidad preferente del cuerpo académico de este departamento, se creó por decreto de Rectoría el 10 de Marzo de1982.

Líneas de investigación
Las líneas de investigación de este Departamento se agrupan en cinco áreas descritas a continuación:
• Descripción de ecosistemas terrestres y marinos, taxonomía y sistemática de flora y fauna locales; análisis de patrones de distribución y sistemas de información geográfica; estructura de comunidades; estudios de ciclos de vida, crecimiento y reproducción de organismos vegetales y animales; conservación y biodiversidad; cambio global.
• Dinámica de poblaciones y comunidades terrestres y marinas; interacciones depredador-presa y herbívoro-planta; ecología energética y nutricional; ecología conductual; fisiología ecológica.
•Macroecología; modelación matemática de sistemas naturales; bases biológicas del uso y manejo de recursos bióticos terrestres y marinos; crecimiento y reproducción de organismos terrestres y marinos de importancia económica; evaluación de recursos pesqueros.
• Interacciones hombre-ambiente; impacto del hombre sobre el medio marino y terrestre; perturbaciones; invasiones biológicas.
• Biología, fisiología y ecología evolutivas, reconstrucción de filogenias, sistemática molecular, filogeografía, genética ecológica de organismos terrestres y marinos.

Objectives
The main objectives of the Department of Ecology include scientific research, graduate and undergraduate teaching, scientific training and outreach programs in the field of Ecology. The study of Biodiversity, from the molecular level to the ecosystem, emerges as the main integrative concept which is manifested through activities that converge onstudies designed to unravel the mechanisms and processes involved in the generation, maintenance anddisruption, natural or anthropogenic, of the biological diversity in marine and terrestrial environments, aswell as the evolutionary relationships established among theircomponents.

Brief History
The Institute of Biological Sciences, currently the Faculty of Biological Sciences, was founded after approval by the Honorary Superior Council of the University in February, 1970. In 1973, through a decree from the Rector s Office, its administrative structure was divided into four Departments, one of them being the Department of Environmental and Population Biology. A further decree from the Rector s Office in December 1988 renamed this unit to the Department of Ecology. Initially, the Department comprised the Laboratories of Botany, Zoology and Ecology, a structure which is no longer in existence. Today, the Department is host to the FONDAP Center for Advanced Studies in Ecology and Biodiversity (CASEB), where most of the academic staff are assigned. Field work interrestrial and marine ecosystems in central Chile is performed either by the Mediterranean Ecological Research Station (EDIEM), situated at the base of the Andes Mountains, or the Coastal Marine Research Station (ECIM), located on the Pacific coast at Las Cruces. The Department also hosts the “Dr. Patricio Sánchez” Flora and Fauna Collection, which provides valuable research and teaching support for Faculty members and external scientists.

Teaching
Faculty members of the Department of Ecology are in charge of teaching under graduate courses in plant biology, evolution, biostatistics and in various areas of ecology within the Faculty of Biological Sciences and other university faculties.
The Department of Ecology alsomaintains a Ph.D. program within the doctoral program in Faculty of Biological Sciences, which was created in1982.

Lines of research
Research within the Department can begrouped in five areas:
• Description of terrestrial and marine ecosystems; taxonomy and systematic of local animals and plants; distribution pattern analysis and geographic information systems; community structure; life history studies; growth and reproduction of plants and animals; conservation and biodiversity; global change.
• Dynamics of terrestrial and marine populations and communities; prey-predator and plant-herbivore interactions; energetic and nutritional ecology; behavioral ecology; physiological ecology.
• Macroecology; mathematical modeling of natural systems; biological basis for the use and management of terrestrial and marine biotic resources; growth and reproduction of economically important marinebiotic resources; fisheries resources assessments.
• Man-environment interactions; human impact on terrestrial and marine ecosystems; disturbances; biological invasions.
• Evolutionary biology, physiology and ecology; phylogeny reconstructions; molecular systematic; phylogeography; population genetics of terrestrial and marine organisms.
